Florida averages 237 sunny days a year. That’s why they call it The Sunshine State, after all.
But if sunny weather and warm temperatures are not enough to convince you to get outdoors, then there are plenty of other things to do outside when you live on the Gulf Coast.
From festivals to fishing adventures, we have outlined some of our favorite outdoor Florida activities. Let’s dive in.
1. Bradenton Blues Festival
Kick-off your first winter in Florida with a weekend full of craft beer, delicious food, and, of course, lively jazz music.
Not only does the Bradenton Blues festival promote nine different jazz musicians, but it also supports local restaurants, bars, breweries, and artisans.
Bradenton will be hosting its annual Blues Festival between December 3rd and 5th, 2021. Tickets go on sale on May 1st.
Get ready to throw on your dancing shoes and enjoy a weekend of soulful sounds.
2. Experience Gulf Coast Fishing
Today’s fishing can become tonight’s dinner. Take advantage of living on the Gulf Coast by embarking on a fishing adventure.
The time of year determines what type of fish you can expect to reel in. While wahoo, tuna, sailfish, and mutton snapper can be caught year-round, other types are seasonal.
Plan your trip during April and May if you are on the hunt for Blue Marlin. Get out on the water between January and March if you want to bring home delicious grouper.
There are plenty of fishing equipment rental companies throughout the Gulf Coast, so you don’t have to worry about buying your gear. Just find a fishing charter and get ready for an awesome day at sea.
3. Explore Florida’s Wildlife
Living in Florida means mild weather year-round, which is why the Sunshine State is home to some of the best hiking trails in the US.
Punta Gorda Nature Park spans 19-acres. Located about an hour south of Bradenton, the park features walking trails through the Palmetto forest. It also includes picnic tables for a post-hike lunch and gorgeous butterfly, flower, and herb gardens.
There is also Amberjack Environmental Park, also located about an hour from Bradenton in Rotonda, Florida. The 225-acres are spread across Cape Haze Peninsula. While exploring, wander down the boardwalk and make your way to Amberjack Slough, the perfect place to spot a variety of Floridian birds.
4. Tour the Florida Everglades
If you are looking for an outdoorsy weekend trip, then head over to Chokoloskee to enjoy Florida water activities in the Everglades.
Everglades Area Tours include day excursions and overnight camping trips. There are also sunset tours, birding voyages, kayak rentals, and charter boat fishing available.
